I believe anything good is worth sharing and I don't believe in gatekeeping so here is a round-up of my best recommendations from last month.
I read this book by Darrow Farr (thank you, Netgalley!) over the course of a very busy three days, using any spare moment to read. I am typically not someone who swoons over a plot-driven book and prefer more character-driven stories, but this one strikes a challenging balance between the two. Simultaneously, I found the landscape descriptions and story of Corsica’s desire for independence to be so compelling and history I had never heard about. It does feel odd to say a book about a kidnapping made me want to visit a place but now I want to see Corsica for myself.
An oft-forgotten fact is that the Met is open on Friday evenings and it feels so quintessentially New York. I went a couple of weeks ago to sneak into the preview of Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, which was one of my favorite fashion exhibits in a long time given the expansiveness of the exhibit and the mix of historical pieces with modern designers’ pieces. A night at the Met does feel like you’re breaking in or living out the book From the Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. You can grab a glass of wine, hear jazz musicians play, then wander the halls aimlessly.
I felt like I missed the boat on watching this movie when it first came out, but I finally sat down to watch it last weekend and loved it. It did an incredible job capturing the idea of the pressure of deciding on a person, a job, a life and committing to it and how the pressure can fuel inertia. While I wish I had watched this movie sooner, I am now more excited for Joachim Trier’s new film, Sentimental Value with many actors appearing in both and the addition of Elle Fanning. Trier’s new film set the record for the longest standing ovation at Cannes. Also looks like they’re having a good time on their press tour.
Summer Bingo Cards
This is so silly, but fun. Last year my coworkers (hi Eve and Hannah!) and I made “bingo cards” for things we wanted to do last summer from “go to Governor’s Island” to “get caught in a summer rain shower.” The ideas were random, but fun and there is a tendency to think of summer as fleeting and the Bingo card helped me think of things I wanted to do this season and make time for them. Here are some things going on mine this summer:
Go to Rockaway beach
Go to the Tin Building for eggs
Manhattan happy meal with Elie
Make pistachio pesto
Watch and learn how to make a beautiful bouquet
Early morning swim
Sunset swim
Watch more rom-coms, inspired by this list
Any suggestions on other things to add?
I’m admittedly a snoop. I love to look inside people’s houses and see how they live, not just the Architectural Digest white-washed version. That’s exactly what this series does and there are a couple of reasons why I love it: the variety in subjects, the minimal context to the photos, and the singular snapshot of them in their space.
Vogue Game
Finally, there is a usable Vogue app! While I won’t say it was worth the wait, there is a game on it I love. Everyday, there is a theme that will show you up to 20 looks that fit that theme and you have a multiple choice to guess who made the look or what fashion show it is from. It is so much fun and I strive to one day to get “front row.”
Love this. I’m definitely going to play summer bingo 🥰
